PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE

Greetings to everyone and I hope you are all surviving the challenging weather we have had of late, the strongest winds I can remember.  Meanwhile back at Hampton Rotary:-

It was great to have Bev and Lance back with us on Tuesday night after their travels – welcome home and it is good to see you back safe and sound.

We had Ken Mirams talking to us at our last meeting about the youth protection declaration forms.  It was good to have him there to answer the many questions our members had. Basically, the forms are not mandatory for everyone but anyone working one on one with children/youth will need one together with their working with children check.

At the moment the club does not have any projects where we are directly involved one on one with children/youth. Certainly, any future projects will require it.

I attended the first of the D9815 Rotary Community Group growth plan meetings recently. The focus was on introducing each other and confirming the main aim of the group which is to address falling membership numbers. We will be looking at how we can increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement and increase our ability to adapt. The group will also be exploring the possibility of new groups and satellite groups.

I have been speaking with Dave White, president of the Sandringham Rotary club, and we may well look at joining clubs on some Tuesdays for Speakers nights. This may start in the new year if both clubs agree.

We had a beautiful sunny day at our last farmers market which was reflected in the takings for the day. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success.  It was lovely to see Lindsay out and helping us again, our good wishes go to both Lindsay and Elma on their continuing road to recovery.

September is National Literacy Month and It is being acknowledged on behalf of Hampton Rotary (thanks Jill) at the Sandringham Hospital where all new mothers will receive a copy of “Ten Little Fingers and Tend Little Toes”.  A classic beautiful baby book written by Mem Fox. Each book has a Hampton Rotary sticker inside and is being personally handed out to the new mothers by one of our members.

The club had a fabulous “Soup and Sweets” night at Amanda’s place which was a great social night with delicious soups and sweets being served, all made by our wonderful members.

Last week we had fun playing ‘Scattergories” after the club dinner at Picassos.

There were some interesting answers!!! But it showed great imagination!

Thanks to Marie and her team for organising the recent Hearing screening/large motor skills assessments program at Hampton Primary School. This is a valuable program and I believe the attendance was good.

Looking forward to our club birthday celebrations coming up.  Thanks to everyone for your ongoing help with the various programs

Best wishes

Gill

YOUTH & EDUCATION PROJECTS

Latest Pre-School Screening for Hearing & Large Motor Skills Held in September

Huge thanks to the team from Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Physiotherapy who conducted hearing and large motor skills screening of pre-school age children from across the Bayside area on 14th September. The hearing screening project, organised by Hampton Rotary with the support of Bayside City Council and held at Hampton Primary School, has been very popular and running for a number of years, and now also includes Large Motor Skills Screening as well.

The results indicate how important projects such as this are, with 37% of the children screened for hearing at this latest session now referred to have follow-ups with their family doctor or specialist audiologist. The physiotherapy results indicated that 98% of the children were at standard or above with their gross motor skills development.

It was great for parents of children soon to start school to get feedback on their hearing and large motor skills development, ensuring they are ready to start school.

This project also provides valuable clinical practice experience for the audiology and physiotherapy students from Uni of Melb as well, who are supported onsite by their clinical mangers - thank you to all the Uni of Melb teams who participated in this project. We’d also like to thank Bayside City Council for their support, and Hampton Primary for making available their school premises for the day. Finally, a special thanks to Hampton Rotary Club members who volunteered and helped out on the day as well…and a very special thanks to Marie Arendsen for project managing this very important project.

We will be holding further screening sessions next year, and will advise when dates become available.

Hampton East School Art Show.

Berendale School (Yr 7 - 12) and Katandra School (P - 6) were combined this year and are located on one site in Hampton East. The combined school is known as Hampton East School.

Last week, Geoff Tickner attended the school's inaugural art show. The emphasis on paintings was the students' representation of the Olympic Games. Other displays were of their cooking skills, jewellery creations and skateboard art. A most impressive display of the students ability for all age groups.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

August Bayside Farmers’ Market

We had a bumper turnout for the August market, and would like to thank all our stallholders for the fantastic line-up of food stalls, coffee and take-away food vans, as well as live entertainment available for our market patrons to enjoy. We hit a new record so far this year for market donations, and want to extend a huge thanks to all the market goers who donated so generously this month, helping to support our many Rotary projects.

We’d also like to thank all our volunteers, who get up early to help set-up the market as well as manage the smooth operations on the day. This month we were helped by volunteers from Hampton Rotary, Brighton North Rotary, Sandringham Rotary, the Hampton Rovers, as well as members of the Sandringham Life Saving Club. It is certainly a big team effort to manage our market each month, so thankyou to all our volunteers.

The Bayside Farmers Market will be back again on Saturday 28th September and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone again then.

Beach Cleaning - Green Point - Sunday 1st September

7 adults and 2 children collected 7 kgs of litter. There were 17 recyclables, lots of polystyrene pieces and the usual high number of cigarette butts.

Our most unusual item found was a very bedraggled teddy bear. The good news for ‘Sandy’ is that he’s feeling much better after a wash and some love.
