PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE

Hello everyone and here we go with my first input into the Hampton Herald

As you are probably aware, my co-president Bev, is away exploring Australia with Lance and I am sure I speak for the club when I say I wish them a safe and enjoyable trip.

We had a lot of fun at the Quiz night in July, organised by our wonderful social team. Held at the Bentleigh Social Club, 14 of us turned up and did really well until the music questions came along! I will say no more! But it was a great night and I hope we can have another one at a later date.

The Farmers market got off to a cold and windy start but the rain managed to stay away until midday and despite the weather we had a good turnout. The volunteers from the Rovers and Life savers were really helpful and it was great to feel their positive energy.

At the board meeting we confirmed the donation of $1100 to pay for 4 wheelchairs for disabled kids. These are kids with disabilities in overseas countries who have no access to them otherwise. Check out the website wheelchairsforkids.org, we may well be doing more work with them in the future with a local primary school and/or an overseas project.

Jill Woolacott was given board approval for her project “Books for babies” a delightful program gifting the classic newborn book “Ten little fingers and ten little toes” to new mums and babies.

All the project leaders gave updates on the amazing work they are doing in primary schools, secondary schools, the market, organising social activities etc. There is plenty happening in the club so thanks everyone for all your efforts.

We had a very informative talk from Grant Holland (The Holland Foundation) who gave us an update on the wonderful work their organisation do to help disadvantaged people get a head start in life through education and employment opportunities. The club were very happy to give a $3000 donation to their very successful work.

Tickets are now available for the district 9815 conference to be held in Bendigo next year.  All details are on the district 9815 website.

YOUTH & EDUCATION PROJECTS

Next Pre-School Hearing & Large Motor Skills Screening Scheduled for September

The dates for the next pre-school screening are confirmed to take place on Saturday 14th September at Hampton Primary School. This will be the second running this year of this very popular and much-needed project.

This September session is now FULLY BOOKED but to join the waitlist, please email familyservices@bayside.vic.gov.au to be added to the list.

Hampton Rotary Club, in partnership with Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Bayside City Council, and supported by Hampton Primary School, deliver this FREE Pre-School Hearing Screening to Bayside children aged 3.5 to 6 years old. In addition, we also co-locate a team from the Uni of Melb Physiotherapy Dept who offer screening for Large Motor Skills of pre-school children as well. This has now become a popular addition to the pre-school screening program.

Thanks to Marie Arendsen for leading this project.  Marie will be organizing the roster of Club members to volunteer to help out on the day, so watch out for this call-out soon.

Youth Mental Health First Aid training for school staff in September

Please note that there has been a date change for the next Youth Mental Health First Aid training course for Adults, which is now scheduled for September 6th & 13th at the Peterson Youth Centre in Highett.

Teachers and Wellbeing teams at local Secondary Colleges have been invited to attend the 2 day course, which is designed for adults who work with youth. They will learn how to recognise and support young people who may be experiencing mental health problems, or in a mental health crisis, and then to develop a practical mental health first aid Action Plan to support them.

This course forms part of our youth project Bayside Teen Mental Health First Aid to provide professional mental health first aid training and support to local school communities for their students and school staff. For more information about the project, please contact:

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

July Bayside Farmers’ Market

The July market saw a steady turnout of people visiting the market, until we had a rain downpour after 12. But the rain managed to stay away for most of the morning, and so as usual, we had a fantastic line-up of food stalls, coffee and take-away food vans, as well as live entertainment for our wonderful market patrons to enjoy.

This month we’d like to particularly thank all our volunteers, who get up early to help set-up the market as well as manage the smooth operations on the day. For the July market, we had members from the Hampton Rovers, as well as members of the Half Moon Bay Surf Life Saving Club, who are raising money for their team entered into the Surf Life Saving World Championships. BIG THANKS to all of you!!

The Bayside Farmers Market will be back again on Saturday 24th August and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone again then.
