FROM THE PRESIDENTS

It's hard to believe that we are almost halfway through 2024 and the club is getting ready for our changeover on Tuesday, 16 July at the Sandringham Yacht Club. This night is an opportunity to reflect on the work we have done and share our thoughts for the coming year. As we gather to celebrate our achievements and set new goals, it is essential to recognize the efforts that have brought us to this point and to envision the path ahead.

Achievements and Goals for the Coming Year

  1. Increasing our Club’s Visibility in the Community Over the past year, we have made strides in making our presence felt within the community. Through various initiatives and events, we have engaged with local residents, businesses, and other organizations. In the coming year, we aim to further increase our visibility by highlighting our projects and impact.
  2. Broader Rollout of the Teen Mental Health First Aid Training Course in Secondary High Schools The mental well-being of our youth is a top priority. We have expanded the Teen Mental Health First Aid training course in several secondary high schools. By equipping young people with the skills to recognise and respond to mental health issues, we hope to foster a more supportive and understanding environment for all students in our community.
  3. Deliver Hearing Screening to Primary School Students in Tonga Our commitment to global health initiatives continues with our project to provide hearing screenings for primary school students in Tonga. Specifically, we aim to screen 60% of the 2000-3000 students in grades 1 and 2 across 60 schools. This project, which will extend throughout 2024, is crucial in identifying and addressing hearing impairments early, thereby improving the educational and social outcomes for these children.

Acknowledgments and Looking Forward

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Board for their unwavering support and guidance throughout 2023-2024. Their dedication and hard work have been instrumental in the successes we have achieved. Welcome to Gill Merzvinskis who will be Co-President with Bev Blackley during the 2024-2025 term.

In conclusion, our changeover night is more than just a ceremonial event; it is a celebration of our collective efforts and a launching pad for future endeavours. We look forward to a night of reflection, inspiration, and renewed commitment to our mission. Together, we will continue to make a difference in our community and beyond.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

 May/June Beach Clean

In May we had 10 volunteers join us at the Dog beach (next to Sandringham Yacht Club). It was a cold morning.  Lots of micro plastics were collected from along the tide line; 13.5kgs worth of rubbish was cleared from the foreshore; 14 recyclables and no syringes.

In June we met at Green Point. It started out a windless morning, but the breeze came up and after our collecting we were forced in doors for our coffee.

Just as in May, lots of microplastics were collected, some fishing gear, a few recyclables but, as we’ve found previously at Green Point, hundreds of cigarette butts.

Amazing team effort to help keep our beaches clean.

May Bayside Farmers’ Market

The May market saw another great turnout, and was a wonderful Autumn morning. All the fantastic food stalls were there, and families loved the music and atmosphere at the market, as well as all the wonderful stalls to choose from, and enjoyed the opportunity to shop, chill out and relax.

Thanks to all the stallholders and volunteers for ensuing another fabulous market, and all the community who came out to support the market.

Remember, the Bayside Farmers Market is held on the 4th Saturday every month at Trey Bit Reserve Sandringham. We can’t wait to see you all again at our June market.
