FROM THE PRESIDENTS

Sunday 3 March 2024 was World Hearing Day. This year's theme is 'Changing mindsets: Let's make ear and hearing care a reality for all '

In 2020, the Rotary Club of Hampton recognized a pressing need to address unidentified hearing issues in young children in Tonga. This prompted the club to select this issue as a potential international project. Collaborating with the Ministry of Health Tonga, the club initiated the process of preparing the project's scope, raising funds, and implementing interventions. These interventions aimed to identify hearing problems through screening young children in primary schools and subsequently educate them on maintaining good ear health.

Beyond focusing on young children, the project sought to extend its reach to parents and other community members, emphasizing the importance of ear health. Drawing from insights provided by participating nurses, the project crafted unique initiatives tailored to Tonga's context. One such initiative involved inviting schools to engage in a local competition centered on raising awareness about ear and hearing care. This competition, complemented by posters and videos distributed to schools, spurred students to prepare presentations that effectively communicated the message of ear health.

To amplify the message within the broader community, a video featuring the project team presenting ear health practices was broadcasted on Tonga's national TV and radio during World Hearing Day —an annual initiative by the WHO. The Tonga Hearing Project continues to make strides, with its initial objective being to screen the hearing of all Year 1 and 2 primary children in Tongatapu.

RECENT EVENTS

Bayside Volunteer Expo – Monday 20th May

On Monday, May 20th, our club took part in providing information about our various volunteer activities to the residents of Bayside in the Brighton Town Hall.

Amanda Hill, Gill Merzvinskis, Liz Ware, and Marie Arendsen were there to talk to many interested members of the community. Christine Lindsey provided us with some very comprehensive posters of the various projects we would welcome help from volunteers, particularly our Farmers’ Market. Amanda brought chocolates to entice passers by.

The hall was filled with all the many volunteer groups of Bayside, so we also had a great opportunity to learn more about these and make contacts. These may be possible companions in any future community projects and also as guest speakers.

We were provided with some delicious cakes, plus tea & coffee to keep our strength up.

Although the afternoon was rather long, it was deemed worthwhile time spent.

YOUTH AND EDUCATION PROJECTS

Pre-School Screening Held Saturday 20th April

The hearing screening project, organised by Hampton Rotary with the support of Bayside City Council and held at Hampton Primary School, has been very popular and running for a number of years, and now also includes Large Motor Skills Screening as well.

The most recent screening session was held on Saturday 20th April at Hampton Primary School. We want to extend a huge thanks to the team from Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Physiotherapy who conducted the hearing and large motor skills assessments of pre-school age children from across the Bayside area.

The results indicate how important projects such as this are, with 20% of the children screened for hearing now referred to have follow-ups with their family doctor or specialist audiologist.

It was great for parents of children soon to start school to get feedback on their hearing and large motor skills development, ensuring they are ready to start school.

Thank you to all the Masters students from the Uni of Melb Audiology and Physiotherapy teams who participated in this project, to the Bayside City Council for their support, and Hampton Primary for making available their school premises for the day. We'd like to also thank Club members who volunteered and helped out on the day as well.

We will be holding another screening session later in the year, and will advise when dates become available.

Teen Mental Health First Aid Training Delivered to Year 10 Students at Sandringham College in May

Over the past week, a course designed to support the mental health of adolescents - Teen Mental Health First Aid – was delivered to all 145 Year 10 students at Sandringham College. This training course, developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia, was delivered by 3 of their accredited trainers – Nicole, Jola and Katie – with the support of the College Wellbeing team. Students learnt about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem.

The initiative to bring this educational course to the Year 10 students was a joint collaboration between Sandringham College and the Rotary Clubs of Hampton and Brighton North, supported by Mental Health First Aid Australia. A big thanks to the College Wellbeing team and staff and the project teams from Rotary for organizing this specialist training to help support the mental health of young people in our local area.

Since the inception of this project, 850 students in total, across three Bayside secondary colleges, have now benefited from participation at this vital mental health training programme for teenagers.

Amalgamation of Berendale and Katandra Schools

Hampton East School has been formed by the amalgamation of Katandra, a P-6 school in Ormond and Berendale, a yr7 - 12 school in Hampton East and located on the Berendale campus.

An amalgamation of names was not allowed and, after much discussion among all relevant parties, the name Hampton East School was chosen.

A new Hampton East School uniform will replace the Katandra and Berendale school uniforms with all existing uniforms in the uniform shop becoming surplus. The school approached the Club to ascertain if we had ways of distributing the stock outside of Australia and it was delivered to Rotary's Donations-In-Kind (DIK) store in West Footscray and earmarked for schools in Timor Leste.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Mothers’ Day Gift Packs Delivered to BayCISS

The Community Committee of Hampton Rotary contacted BayCISS (Bayside Community Information and Support Services) to ascertain whether the Club could support BayCISS mothers for Mothers' Day on 11 May. A positive response was received from Rose Paduano, CEO of BayCISS and the following items were identified for inclusion in a Mothers' Day hamper - Shampoo, Conditioner, Hand Cream, Moisturiser and Soap. These products were sourced from a supportive pharmacy, packed into colourful bags and delivered to BayCISS where they were gratefully received by Rose and staff. BayCISS staff have now distributed them to Mums over the past few weeks.

The photos show all items awaiting packing and their delivery to BayCISS by Geoff Tickner.

Hampton East School Collaboration with Woolworths for Student Training

Club member Geoff Tickner has been involved with projects at Hampton East School (formerly Berendale) for many years, and has recently participated in an initiative the school has introduced with Woolworths, to provide retail training to students.

Woolworths has established a Mini Woollies Store at Hampton East School. It is a concept developed by Woolworths in conjunction with Fujitsu and is

offered only to special schools. It is gradually being rolled out throughout Australia and New Zealand after the first store commenced operation in 2018.

A Mini Woollies Store is an exact replica of a normal Woolworths store with a range of staple products, fruit & vegetables, soft drinks, tea & coffee and dairy. It is equipped with the same scanning, weighing and accounting machines seen in all Woolworth stores.

Year 11 & 12 Students at Hampton East School receive training covering inventory, stocking & ordering, replenishing products, scanning & weighing

products, packing for customers and cash handling. There is no credit card payments system and all cash transactions use imitational notes and coin.

The training students receive may allow them to achieve a certification in retail or supermarket services. Woolworths has found that students succeeding in these roles make excellent

employees who have a pride in their job and what they have achieved.

Geoff Tickner attended the official opening on 23 April and participated in selecting products required for dinner which needed both scanning, identification and weighing plus paying.
