FROM THE PRESIDENTS

November has been a quieter month with a public holiday - Cup Day - so there wasn’t a club meeting on November 7th. Hampton Rotarians and partners enjoyed a social night at Sandringham Yacht Club on November 14th. Thank you once again to  Rob Ware for organising our tables. We all enjoyed the fellowship and time spent together in such a lovely setting.

A group of Hampton Rotarians visited Berendale School last week to see students using some of the gym equipment provided by our club. Thank you to Geoff Tickner for organising the visit.

Liz and Bev have recently attended two planning meetings for the annual Bayside Family Christmas Event which will be held on Wednesday 13th December at the Hampton RSL. Again this year, Hampton Rotarians will be making up the Christmas gift bags for children in Bayside supported by BAYCISS and Family Life. Students from St. Leonard’s College have donated the gifts. We will be organising the gift bags on Tuesday 12th December and will need many volunteers to help achieve this.

The Bayside Family Christmas Event is sponsored by Brighton and Hampton Rotary Clubs and supported by Bayside City Council, CWA Bayside, St. Leonard’s College, Family Life, BAYCISS, Victoria Police, Rotary Passport Melbourne and Hampton RSL. It certainly looks like it will be a wonderful Christmas celebration.

Our next Farmers’ Market is on Saturday 25th November at Trey Bit Reserve Sandringham. we're sure it will be another busy market with such a wide variety of produce on offer. Hoping for some lovely weather!

So let us all ‘Create Hope in the World’ by working for peace and mental well-being.

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Teen Mental Health First Aid Training held at Beaumaris Secondary College

As part of the Club’s Youth Mental Health project, the Teen Mental Health First Aid training course was presented to the entire year 9 student cohort at Beaumaris Secondary College in early November. 180 students received training to learn about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem.

We want to thank the 4 trainers from Mental Health First Aid Australia (Katie, Rebecca, Jola and Jimmy) for delivering the course to all the students across 3 sessions/days of training. We’d also like to thank Beaumaris Secondary College for their collaboration on this initiative, and for all the work required their end to incorporate the training into the curriculum for the entire year 9 group of students.

The Teen Mental Health First Aid training course is developed and accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and designed especially for teenagers, and delivered in the school setting. The delivery of this training forms part of our youth project to help improve the mental health of high school students in our local area, and to date, 700 students in years 9 and 10 at Bayside secondary colleges have benefited from this training.

RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment)

The annual RYPEN Camp was held at Camp Getaway, Axedale near Bendigo from 27th to 29th October.

This Rotary International project sees Rotary Clubs sponsoring students from years 9 to 11 and aged 15 to 17 to attend the camp. Students undertake a series of group sessions which involve working collaboratively with other students as they participate in indoor/ outdoor and passive/ physical activities.

Students undertake self-evaluation and reflection exercises which provide them with the opportunity to apply the things they have learnt to their own lives and experience. All supervisors are registered teachers or hold other accredited qualifications.

Hampton Rotary liaises with teachers from Sandringham Secondary College to identify and select suitable students. This year, Sienna Douglas attended the camp.

Berendale School Visit

A number of Club members visited the School on 8th November to see the gymnasium in operation with students using the equipment towards which the Club had contributed $1,500.

Equipment in the well fitted out gym consists of numerous exercise bikes, a treadmill, a rowing machine, leg & shoulder weight strengthening machines and dumbbells of various weights.

The gym forms part of an extensive physical education program being developed at the school to benefit both students and staff.

Juliet Cooper, the Principal at Berendale, showed us around.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

October Bayside Farmers’ Market

Our Farmers’ Market held in October was a busy one. There was a wonderful variety of foods to try and many people enjoyed what was on offer!

Hampton Beach Clean

November’s beach clean was held at Hampton beach with the weather lovely and sunny.  There was a large attendance, including families with inquisitive children.  We collected 7.5kg of rubbish.  Once again, we were kept busy picking up the micro plastics along the tide line.  We are seeing a reduction in the number of plastic straws, but chupa chup sticks and soy sauce ‘fish’ lids are prevalent.

Next Bayside Farmers’ Market – Saturday 25 November

The next Bayside Farmers Market is coming up on Saturday 25th November - 8am-1pm, at Trey Bit Reserve (Jetty Road), Sandringham. You’ll be able to shop for locally sourced fresh seasonal produce direct from the farm, gourmet foods and beverages, artisan products from local makers, take-away food & coffee, and enjoy live music …all at a fabulous beachside location! And, with Christmas just around the corner, what a great opportunity to stock up early with Christmas gift and hamper items too
