FROM THE PRESIDENTS

We had a very busy Farmers’ Market on September 23rd probably due to the lovely weather on the day. A very big thank you to Lance who is the chair of our Farmers’ Market Committee for his efforts updating club members on best practice procedures for the set up/set down on market day. He has spent many hours updating equipment to make our Farmers’ Market run smoothly each month. We would also like to thank Ros for her determined effort with the credit card machines. Ros has spent a lot of time ensuring we have enough battery life in these machines for the entirety of each market.

At our last Club meeting, PDG David Tolstrup spoke to our members about Rotary Insurance. He displayed a wealth of knowledge on Risk Management for Rotarians and Clubs. We certainly enjoyed his presentation on this important subject.

In the next few weeks we will be discussing the Regionalisation Zone 8 Pilot Project where we are required to submit a survey to District.

We have a number of our members travelling overseas at present. We wish them well in their travels and look forward to the travel stories on their return.

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Teen Mental Health First Aid Training coming up at Beaumaris Secondary College

As part of the Club’s Youth Mental Health project, a course designed for teenagers will be delivered in late October to the entire year 9 student cohort at Beaumaris Secondary College. 180 students will receive training on Teen Mental Health First Aid and learn about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem. We want to thank the College for their collaboration on this initiative to deliver the training to all the Year 9 students.

The Teen Mental Health First Aid training course is developed and accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and designed especially for teenagers, and delivered in the school setting. The delivery of this training forms part of our youth project to help improve the mental health of high school students in our local area. To date, more than 500 students have received training over the past 12 months, and with this latest course, more than 700 students will have received training.

Support for Katandra Berendale School

For some years our Club has supported Berendale School students with an annual Resilience Award presented to a year 11 student prior to them commencing their year 12 studies. Berendale has now merged with Katandra P-6 School.

Recently, Berendale has built and equipped a new gym training room. Equipment consists of multiple exercise bikes, a treadmill, a rowing machine, floor mats and a shoulder weight strengthening machine. The Club contributed $1500 towards purchasing this equipment.

Club members will attend a demonstration of the new equipment at the school on on Wednesday 25 October. They can also partake of coffee produced by students as part of their hospitality training.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

September Bayside Farmers’ Market Raises Funds for Polio Eradication

We want to thank all market patrons who donated so generously at our September Bayside Farmers’ Market. With the donations from this market, our Club has been able to donate to the Rotary International End Polio campaign. This initiative was formed in 1985 to eradicate polio which had paralysed 1,000+ children every single day in 125 polio-endemic countries. By providing an effective vaccine, Rotary and it’s partners have to date immunized over 2.5 billion children worldwide. Because of the amazing work being done across the globe, now just 2 countries remain wild polio-endemic. Our latest donation will now contribute towards helping to eradicate polio in these last two countries.
