FROM THE PRESIDENTS

D.G. Ian Ballantine visited our club on Tuesday 29th August. He set out the goals for the coming year and complimented many of our projects. He also asked us to support and attend the District Conference which will be held in Warrnambool in March 22-24 next year. D.G. Ian introduced his partner Dr Helen Parker who is in charge of the Emergency Department of Sandringham Hospital. Dr Helen has chosen Polio Plus as her charity of choice and we showed our support by sending a cheque for $500. At our Board Meeting, we decided to further award the funds raised at our next Farmers’ Market to Polio Plus.

August was a busy social month for our club with a theate night on 23 August and a french dining experience on 22 August. Brighton Theatre Company's production Fracked spotlighted the views and issues associated with drilling for shale gas.  It was wonderful to see members and guests at Bistro La Provence in Brighton where we enjoyed classical French fare.

Saturday September 9th was a busy day for many of our members. The Pre-school Hearing Screening was held at Hampton Primary School. We would like to thank the staff and students from Melbourne University Audiology and Physiotherapy Departments for their excellent support of this project.

September 9th was also the first Guess Who’s Coming for Dinner for the year. It was great to re-introduce this popular event back into our social activities calendar. Lots of lively discussion and delicious food ensured a night where we enjoyed the fellowship of the evening.

Thanks to Geoff Tickner and Lance Blackley for sharing their latest travel stories in our Travel Snippets last Tuesday night. Geoff spoke about researching Prue’s family in England and Victoria visiting the areas where the Shaw family lived dating back to the 17th century. Lance talked about a recent visit to the Kimberley region of Western Australia where he showed photos and a video of the magnificent scenery of this spectacular area of Australia.

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Pre-School Screening Testing Held on Saturday 9th September

We held our second Pre-School Screening session for this year on Saturday 9th September, and want to thank all the families who registered to have their children tested for both hearing issues and gross motor skills development…all prior to the children starting school next year.

The audiology results highlighted that 25% of the children tested required further follow-up to monitor their hearing levels, and 11% of the children were flagged as requiring further monitoring of their gross motor skills.  These results highlight how important projects such as this are to support the health and well-being of our local community.

We extend a big thankyou to the audiology and physiotherapy Masters students from the University of Melbourne, who carried out the testing (under supervision), and Hampton Primary School for generously allowing us to use their school as the testing venue. Also, thanks for the support from Bayside City Council who managed all the registrations from families in our local area.

Finally, a big thank you also to our Club members who manned the registration desk on the day, and a special thank you to Marie for leading this project. We look forward to being back again next year when we continue to provide this service to the Bayside community.
