FROM THE PRESIDENTS

The club has been focusing on planning for 2023-2024 and we would like to share with you our goals for this year:

  1. Increasing our club’s visibility in the community
  2. Broader rollout of the Teen Mental Health First Aid training course in secondary high schools in the community
  3. Deliver hearing screening to 60% of the 2000-3000 primary school students (grade 1 and 2) in 60 schools in Tonga (project continues throughout 2024).

We can only achieve this through the commitment and enthusiasm of our members and we have several initiatives to support member engagement including:

  • a new member welcome pack specifically developed for our club
  • each new member has a designated mentor
  • new members encouraged to join project committees
  • seeking member feedback and addressing issues
  • encouraging all members to participate in projects through development of project teams
  • promoting everyone's input into strategic and annual operational planning
  • maximising member retention by addressing issues promptly
  • reviewing our meeting format to reflect members expectations

We are looking forward to the meeting with the Rotary Club of Brighton north on 10 August to hear about the impact of the joint teen mental health first aid project we have been working on over the past year.

Thursday August 10 - Joint Club Meeting with Brighton North Rotary

At this joint Club meeting, we heard an update on the Bayside Teen Mental Health First Aid project from 2 of the participating Colleges. Firstly, Christine Lindsey, who manages the project, shared an overview and update on the project, which so far, has delivered Teen Mental Health First Aid training to all Year 10s at Sandringham College last year & this year & all year 9s at Brighton secondary in June. And later, in October, the TeenMHFA course will also be delivered to all Year 9s at Beaumaris Secondary. By the end of this year, 700 students in years 9 or 10 will have attended the Teen MHFA training since the first course was held in August last year.

We then heard from Guest Speakers Peter Mangold, Head of Wellbeing at Brighton Secondary College, and Isabella Farrar, Year 10-12 Wellbeing Co-ordinator at Sandringham College, who each shared a perspective on the mental health challenges facing students and school communities today, including social anxiety post COVID lockdowns, as well as the heightened challenges with social media for teenagers today. Both speakers acknowledged the significant positive impact the TeenMHFA training has provided the students (as well as teachers) by helping to break down barriers and stigma about mental health problems, and building confidence in students,  to foster open communication about discussing mental health problems, and recognising and responding to a friend in need.

We want to thank Brighton North Rotary for hosting the joint meeting at the Brighton Yacht Club, as well as their significant contribution to the partnership both Clubs share in this project.

ABOUT THE PLAY

COMEDY

How would you feel about sitting in front of that nice old village pub on a sunny afternoon while convoys of 40-ton tankers roll past six feet away?

Deerland Energy’s plans to drill for shale gas in the pretty village of Fenstock are going well. The company is looking at big profits.

They can count on the support of distinguished scientists working in university departments funded by the energy companies while at local level, Councillor Pilbeam, Chair of the Planning Committee, seems to be open to lucrative offers.

The only slight snag is a ragged band of protesters, reluctantly led by retired academic Elizabeth Blackwood. Surely, she’s just another ‘mad old biddy’, as she’s characterized by ruthless PR guru Joe Boxberg.

Tickets are selling fast so, if you’d like to come along, please email Annette_grime@hotmail.com to reserve ticket(s).

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Physiotherapy Students Intergenerational Communication Skills Project

Marie Arendsen has been leading a fantastic new Club project to help improve the communication skills of physiotherapy students.

Physiotherapy students from the University of Melbourne are provided with experiential communications training and coached to conduct interviews with older people who have experienced an illness or range of illnesses and would seek assistance from a physio to manage symptoms. Students are supervised while conducting these mock interviews with volunteers and are provided with feedback on their communication skills and areas for improvement.

This project is a collaboration between Hampton Rotary and the University of Melbourne Physiotherapy Dept, and so far this year, 5 sessions per month were held over 6 months, with a total of 85 students participating, supported by 25 Club member volunteers as interviewees.

The University and students report great feedback about the value of this training, so we’re thrilled to now include this as an ongoing project for the Club, with the next phase of interviews to recommence in January 2024.

Next Pre-School Testing Project Scheduled for September

The dates for the next pre-school screening are now confirmed to take place on Saturday 9th September at Hampton Primary School. This will be the second running this year of this very popular and much-needed project.

Hampton Rotary Club, in partnership with Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Bayside City Council, and supported by Hampton Primary School, will be delivering the FREE Pre-School Hearing Screening to Bayside children aged 3.5 to 6 years old. In addition, we’re also co-locating a team from the Uni of Melb Physiotherapy Dept who will be offering screening for Large Motor Skills of pre-school children as well. This has now become a popular addition to the pre-school screening program for over a year.

Thanks to Marie Arendsen for leading this project.  Registration details will be available shortly and with limited places available, the sessions book out quickly. Marie will be organizing the roster of Club members to volunteer to help out on the day, so watch out for this call-out soon.
