From the President

Our Club Changeover was held on Tuesday 13th June at the Sandringham Yacht Club. Thank you to Liz for organising this fantastic venue with delicious food and wonderful service. During the evening President Amanda outlined many of the projects and events held throughout the year. She also awarded PHF’s to Liz Ware, Ros Bodley, Peter Read and Lance Blackley. Congratulations to these Rotarians who have put in such time and effort for our Club in the past twelve months.

It was my pleasure to welcome back John Skerritt as a member of our Club. Now that John is retired and not working in Canberra, he has the time necessary to contribute to Club projects and I’m sure he is going to be a great asset to our Club.

The first meeting for the year was a Club Forum on 20th June. Great brainstorming and some good ideas were presented for the forthcoming year. Committees were organised and it was a most productive meeting.

On Tuesday 27th June our International Director, Peter Read gave a comprehensive and detailed report about our Tongan Hearing Project. This is such a worthwhile project and our thanks go to Peter and his team for their tireless efforts. One of the members of Peter’s team is Hans Stahl and during this meeting Hans was presented with a PHF for his contributions to this project, his ongoing support at our Farmers’ Market each month and the Turkeye Breadmaking Equipment Project to provide bread for victims of the earthquake in Turkeye earlier this year. This project was initiated by the Rotary Club of Dachau and our Club provided $6000. Thank you Hans for all that you have done throughout the past five years. Unfortunately for our Club, Hans has been transferred back to Germany with his work. It is very sad to say goodbye to Hans and Christie. We have enjoyed your friendship over the past five years and we wish you both all the very best for the future.

Co President Amanda and myself look forward to the year ahead. We strive to “Create Hope in the World” by working for peace and mental well-being.

Regards

Bev Blackley

ABOUT THE PLAY

COMEDY

How would you feel about sitting in front of that nice old village pub on a sunny afternoon while convoys of 40-ton tankers roll past six feet away?

Deerland Energy’s plans to drill for shale gas in the pretty village of Fenstock are going well. The company is looking at big profits.

They can count on the support of distinguished scientists working in university departments funded by the energy companies while at local level, Councillor Pilbeam, Chair of the Planning Committee, seems to be open to lucrative offers.

The only slight snag is a ragged band of protesters, reluctantly led by retired academic Elizabeth Blackwood. Surely, she’s just another ‘mad old biddy’, as she’s characterized by ruthless PR guru Joe Boxberg.

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Teen Mental Health First Aid Training Delivered to Year 9s at Brighton Secondary College in June

During June, all Year 9 students at Brighton Secondary College attended the Teen Mental Health First Aid training course. We want to extend a big thanks to the course trainers (Nicole, Jola, Katie and Beckie) from Mental Health First Aid Australia for delivering this course to the entire Year 9 cohort of 176 students. Students learned about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem.

We wish to thank Brighton Secondary College and Mental Health First Aid Australia for the collaboration to bring this course to the Year 9 students.

The delivery of this training is part of the Bayside Teen Mental Health First Aid project, which has so far delivered mental health first aid training to 515 Bayside secondary school students, in partnership with Brighton North Rotary and supported by Bayside City Council and the Rotary Foundation.

For more information about this project, please contact Christine Lindsey at email: Christine.lindsey@gmail.com

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Delivered to Secondary School Staff in June

In supporting youth and entire school communities with mental health first aid training, we recently held a course specifically for adults called Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Teachers and Wellbeing teams at 4 local Secondary Colleges attended this latest course. The 14-hour course for adults who work with youth ran across 2 weeks and everyone learned about how to recognise and support young people who may be experiencing mental health problems, or in a mental health crisis, and then to develop a practical mental health first aid Action Plan to support them.

We want to extend a big thank you to Nicole from Mental Health First Aid Australia for delivering this professional mental health educational program for adults, as well as the local Secondary Colleges who supported sending staff to the course.

Also, a big thank you to Club members (and friends) who volunteered to help with the set-up and pack-down for the training each day, which was held at the Highett Community Centre.

This course formed part of our youth project Bayside Teen Mental Health First Aid to provide professional mental health first aid training and support to local school communities for their students and school staff.

Next Pre-School Testing Project Scheduled for September

The dates for the next pre-school screening are now confirmed to take place on Saturday 9th September at Hampton Primary School. This will be the second running this year of this very popular and much-needed project.

Hampton Rotary Club, in partnership with Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Bayside City Council, and supported by Hampton Primary School, will be delivering the FREE Pre-School Hearing Screening to Bayside children aged 3.5 to 6 years old. In addition, we’re also co-locating a team from the Uni of Melb Physiotherapy Dept who will be offering screening for Large Motor Skills of pre-school children as well. This has now become a popular addition to the pre-school screening program for over a year.

Thanks to Marie Arendsen for leading this project.  Registration details will be available in August and with limited places available, the sessions book out quickly. Marie will be organizing the roster of Club members to volunteer to help out on the day, so watch out for this call-out at a later date.

For further enquiries about this project, please contact: Marie Arendsen at: arendsen.m.a@gmail.com

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

June Bayside Farmers’ Market

We had a great turnout for the June Bayside Farmers Market. We beat the rain; the sun was shining (…for a while) and it was a fantastic way for families to start the weekend & the school holidays.

There were a few hiccups with our new banking terminals onsite at the entrance gates, but market patrons were very understanding and patient, which we really appreciated – thank you.

Thanks to everyone who came and supported the market and all the wonderful hardworking & dedicated stallholders who once again provided an incredible range of amazing locally sourced produce and gourmet foods & goodies…and some beautiful artisan wares as well.

Also, thank you to our many hardworking volunteers from our Club and supporting local Rotary Clubs – we really are grateful for all your hard work. What an amazing market community we have!

Remember, the Bayside Farmers Market is held on the 4th Saturday every month at Trey Bit Reserve Sandringham. We’d love to see you all again at our July market on Saturday 22nd July 8am-1pm.

Next Bayside Farmers’ Market – Saturday 22nd July

The next Bayside Farmers Market is coming up on Saturday 22nd July - 8am-1pm, at Trey Bit Reserve (Jetty Road), Sandringham. You’ll be able to shop for locally sourced fresh produce direct from the farm, gourmet foods and beverages, artisan products from local makers, take-away food & coffee, and enjoy live music …all at a fabulous beachside location!
