YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS
Bayside Teen Mental Health First Aid Project
In early May, the Teen Mental Health First Aid training course was delivered to all 170 Year 10 students at Sandringham College. Students learnt about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem.
The course consisted of 3 training modules each of 75 minutes incorporating instructor-led training, video presentations and group discussion. The content and course materials were developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia and delivered at the College by 3 of their accredited trainers – Nicole, Jola, and Kate.
The training at Sandringham College is part of our ambition to roll out training to high school students across Bayside as part of our Bayside Teen Mental Health First Aid project. This joint project of the Rotary Clubs of Hampton and Brighton North is supported by Mental Health First Aid Australia, Bayside City Council and the Rotary Foundation. We are grateful for this support which enables us to deliver this specialist training to help support the mental health of young people in Bayside.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS
April Bayside Farmers’ Market
We had a good turnout for the April market and some people were also getting in early for Mothers’ Day and doing some gift shopping as well. We’d also like to give a big shout-out to everyone who donated so generously at the market to contribute toward our international Hearing Screening Project in Tonga - thanks to those who donated and supported the market!
May’s Hampton Beach Clean – Sunday May 1st
May’s beach clean showcased Melbourne’s 4 seasons in one day! We started dry, the rain came, the sun dried us out, then it hailed! 5 brave volunteers collected in the wintery conditions. Notably a couple of syringes were found, one with the needle protruding. We also collected a wet, sandy sleeping bag! This will be washed and donated to charity. There were a lot of microplastics in the high tide water line – it was good to collect these to prevent them being washed back into the ocean. About 7kg of rubbish was removed.
Next Bayside Farmers’ Market – Saturday 27th May
The next Bayside Farmers Market is coming up on Saturday 27th May - 8am-1pm, at Trey Bit Reserve (Jetty Road), Sandringham. You’ll be able to shop for locally sourced fresh produce direct from the farm, gourmet foods and beverages, artisan products from local makers, take-away food & coffee, and enjoy live music …all at a fabulous beachside location!
More details about the market are also available at the market website: https://BaysideFarmersMarket.com.au
Market Volunteers Needed
If you’re interested in joining our volunteer team at the monthly Bayside Farmers’ Market, we’d love to hear from you. It’s only a commitment of 3 hours each month and no experience is necessary…so if you like meeting other locals and want to get involved in a fantastic community event that raises funds for many worthy causes, please get in touch.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS
Rotary Hearing Screening Project Tonga 2023
It’s great to see the progress so far on our international Tonga Hearing Screening Project. The first round of nurses in Tonga have now received training and children are currently being screened for their hearing.
The Rotary Club of Hampton (D9810) and the Rotary Club of Nuku‘alofa (D9920), in partnership with The Ministry of Health Tonga commenced the hearing screening project for class 1 and 2 students in Tongatapu on 29 April with the arrival in Tonga of Project Manager Peter Read (Hampton Rotary) accompanied by two Audiologists from Australia. They have joined the Tongan team led by ENT Registrar Dr Sepiuta Lopati and Audiologist Phillip Luey from Vaiola Hospital, and community Education specialist Emma Luey, and commenced training nurses from the NCD and Reproductive Health departments who will undertake the screening activities.
Mobilisation of the team is the culmination of three years of preparation and continuous communication between the clubs, which was delayed due to Covid and natural disasters.
The project is financed by a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, sponsor Rotary clubs and donors from Australia, Germany, and the Kingdom of Tonga.
0ver a 9-12month period, the trained nurses will be visiting schools across Tongatapu to test the hearing of Class 1 and 2 students.
In the photos, you see the first group of nurses who received training, the training team, and specialist equipment supplied by Rotary under the project, and some of the training activities.
