From the President

I hope you all enjoyed the easter break despite the cold snap! The club is very pleased to see the Tonga pre-school hearing project actually start this month with Peter Read heading over with the specialist team in the next week.

I would like to thank Peter for his determination and hard work over the past two to three years to develop the proposal and collaborate with other clubs whilst navigating the uncertainty with the Covid-19 pandemic and natural disasters in Tonga.

The project budget of AUD $115,000 Includes purchase specialist equipment funded from donations from our Bayside Farmers Market, other local Rotary Clubs in Australia and Germany, the Kingdom of Tonga and a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. I would also like to thank Hans Stahl and Lindsay Morgan for their work to make this project a reality.

With the Rotary International Convention occurring in Melbourne next month, our club is organising for hosting 10 international visitors to an Australian dinner – many Rotary clubs will be hosting these dinners which provide an opportunity to showcase our Australian cuisine and produce. Look out for the photos in the June newsletter.

The next Bayside Farmers Market is on Saturday 22 April  - fingers crossed for good weather!

Regards

Amanda

Recent Events

Tuesday March 14 - Speaker – Zoe Murdoch, Teacher at McKinnon Secondary College

Keeping our beaches safe through youth engagement and education.

Zoe introduced a project which is a collaboration between McKinnon Secondary College and Hampton Life Saving Club,

This tiered program educates teens about the value of our coastal waterways and provides practical surf safety and first aid skills. Aligned with Life Saving Victoria qualifications, this truly diverse program caters to different learning needs and swim competencies as well as varied social and cultural backgrounds. From beach-only learning to the opportunity to earn a Surf Rescue Certificate and join a beach patrol, participants will be encouraged to become part of the vital surf lifesaving community. Designed to be sustainable, the program offers pathways for participants to train and mentor future cohorts and can be replicated across the state.

Each year, up to 400 McKinnon year 9 students will work with volunteer lifesavers from HLSC to learn about the coastal environment, how to respond to and manage first aid and emergency incidents, and how patrolling local beaches helps keep them safe.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

April’s Hampton Beach Clean – Sunday April 2nd

This month’s beach clean was at the Sandringham dog beach. The volunteers enjoyed the sunny day along with the social cuppa to finish. 10kgs of rubbish was collected.  The big find was the fire extinguisher – a little bit trickier to dispose of than our usual recycling and general rubbish.

We have also received a summary all the results for Clean Up Australia Day which can be found HERE.

The Next Hampton Beach Clean Up will take place at the end of Small St. on Sunday May 7th, 9am-10am.

Hampton Rotary supports this local environmental initiative so if you can assist by volunteering to help with the clean-up, contact Annette Grime for more information – email Annette_grime@hotmail.com

Community Survey from Victoria Police

We’re helping to spread the word about a community survey currently being conducted by Victoria Police.

Victoria Police is currently undertaking its annual Community Sentiment Survey to assist in understanding what Victorians want from police, how safe people feel, their ideas to improve safety, how they want to engage with police and how comfortable they feel approaching Police and PSOs.

You can access the survey by scanning the QR code in the arttached image or the survey can also be accessed via the Victorian Government website https://www.engage.vic.gov.au.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Hampton Rotary Donates $6,000 to the Rotary Turkey Earthquake Relief Project

We’d like to give a big shout-out to everyone who donated so generously at our Bayside Farmers’ Market over the last couple of months, to contribute toward the Rotary Turkey Earthquake Relief Project. Hampton Rotary has now donated $6,000 towards purchasing bread making equipment that can make 8,000-10,000 loaves of bread each day. This is providing real on the ground support to those in need - thank you so much for your donations. You’ll see in the photo the bread-making equipment being loaded by Rotary members in Turkey and on its way to the disaster zone. This has been an awesome effort so thanks to everyone who has supported the market and donated so generously!

Tonga Hearing Project

We are pleased to report that our International “signature’ Project - To provide capacity-building training on ear health education for community nurses and ENT staff at the Vaiola Hospital and screening of the hearing of elementary school students (grade 1 and 2) in Nuku’alofa and Tongatapu in Tonga was approved in January 2023 and has now commenced.

This project, which was under preparation for three years, experienced significant delays and lockdowns in Tonga due to Corona Virus and disruption caused by major volcanic activity and prevented travel and development. The project is being undertaken by the Rotary Club of Hampton and the Rotary Club of Nuku'alofa in Tonga. has been approved by The Rotary Foundation.

This significant project will be implemented over a 12 month period with the initial training phase in Tonga commencing in May 2023. The Project Manager Peter Read will travel to Tonga in late April followed by two Audiologists from Australia. The training team will be supported and assisted by professional staff from the Ministry of Health Tonga. It is anticipated that over 40 nurses will be trained and over the 12 months, we anticipate that between 2000-3000 students will be screened.

Funding for the project has been raised by Rotary clubs in Victoria, NSW, South Australia, Germany, Tonga, private donors and major support from the Rotary Foundation. Funding also covered purchase of sets of audiology testing equipment and computers to document results which will be used, after training, by teams from the District Health Centres to screen children at their schools. The project is expected to form part of a regular hearing screening program for Tonga.

Teachers, students, parents and the public will also be presented with educational material informing them of the importance of ear health.

Where results of the screening identify hearing problems, the student will be referred to the ENT clinic in the National Vaiola Hospital for further investigation and intervention as necessary.

The program in the field will be managed by a Tongan based audiologist, progress will be closely monitored and the outcome progressively reported.
