From the President

The Rotary Club of Hampton conducted a community consultation via our Bayside Farmers Market in September and November 2022. Fifty-eight responses were collected on four questions:

  • Do you know of any Rotary projects?
  • How could we best get information out to the community?
  • Are mental health projects an area that Rotary should be involved?
  • What areas are important to be considered under the club’s community grant program?

When asked about mechanisms for getting information about Rotary out to the community (unprompted responses), the two highest responses were:

  • Social media 23/58 (40%)
  • Signs at market 12/58 (21%)

Leaflets received 12% response rate. When asked about areas to focus our community grants, the two areas identified were:

  • Community activities 26% with holding a community event 8/58 (14%)
  • Working with the elderly 28% with social activities for elderly 7/58 (12%)

The club's board noted there are a number of service organisations working with the elderly The club is discussing holding a community event and, working with the local police, discuss managing home safety and cyber security issues. We will keep you posted through this newsletter and via our social media.

Regards

Amanda

500 Local Teenagers Benefit from Teen Mental Health First Aid Training

Our youth mental health project to directly assist young people in the local Bayside community is growing. We’ve now had confirmed that we will be rolling out the TEEN Mental Health First Aid training course to Year 9 students at Brighton Secondary College in June. This is in addition to the 170 Year 10 students at Sandringham College who will participate in the course in April. This will mean that since we started rolling out the TEEN Mental Health First Aid programmes last year, 500 students in total, across two Bayside secondary colleges, will have benefited from participation at this vital mental health training programme for teenagers.

The Teen Mental Health First Aid training course is developed and accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and designed especially for teenagers, and delivered in the school setting. The delivery of this training forms part of our project partnership with Brighton North Rotary, to help improve the mental health of youth in our local area. We want to thank Bayside City Council and the Rotary Foundation for their support of this Rotary initiative.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

February’s Bayside Farmers’ Market Support for Türkiye Earthquake Relief Project

We’d like to give a big shout-out to everyone who donated so generously at our February market, to contribute toward the Rotary Türkiye Earthquake Relief Project. The money raised at the market went towards purchasing bread making equipment that can make 8,000-10,000 loaves of bread each day. This is providing real on the ground support to those in need - thank you so much for the generous donations.

Beach Clean 5th March (Clean Up Australia Day)

There were several groups collecting rubbish at Green Point on Sunday 5th March.  Nearly 15 kg of rubbish was collected by the team of Hampton (3188) Beach Patrol. Disappointingly a lot of time was spent picking up cigarette butts.  Whilst it was tricky to count, we estimate >400 butts were collected.

Other notable items included 30 cable ties - 14 straws - 1 nang, 1 homemade bong - Pair thongs, underpants, raincoat - Ball, Shuttle Cock, Frisbee – Plastic bottle lids 30 coffee cups - 23 lids - Hundreds of soft plastics such as food wrappers - small and large pieces of Polystyrene - 6 masks - Fishing line, sinker.

There were lots of grateful beach goers, with one family postponing their swim to help and another offering chocolate   many thanks to them.

The Next Hampton Beach Clean Up will take place on the first Sunday in April – 2nd April, 9am-10am.

Hampton Rotary supports this local environmental initiative so if you can assist by volunteering to help with the clean-up, contact Annette Grime for more information – email Annette_grime@hotmail.com
