From the President

The Rotary Club of Hampton is starting our guest speaker program again this year and looking forward to Catherine Wilkins from Victoria Police joining us on Tuesday 14 February to discuss issues within the Bayside Community.

The club's board have discussed working closer with the police and convening a community information night on issues that affect all of us - we'll keep you posted on this potential initiative.

The Board also recently agreed to funding in 2023 for a Youth Mental Health First Aid course tailored for adults who work, volunteer or live with youth. The Mental Health Program ran in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Brighton North has been well received and based on community feedback is an initiative very well supported.

These initiatives rely on funding and people to organise  - the Bayside Farmers Market is a major source of income and we are still looking for volunteers to support our monthly market and welcome new members at any time.

Regards

Amanda

MEETINGS & SOCIAL EVENTS

Recent Events

Return to Rotary for 2023

Meetings resumed on January 17 with a social night at Sandringham Yacht Club. Once again members enjoyed the ambience, fellowship and dinner at this venue. It was an extremely hot evening, and where better to spend it than overlooking a sparkling Port Phillip Bay. We were even entertained with a sound and light show as a storm rolled across the bay later in the evening.

Tuesday January 24 - Club Meeting at Hampton RSL

Our monthly club forums are invaluable in enabling all members to voice opinions and discuss ideas for future projects. This first one for 2023 covered plans for the coming year and ideas for fine tuning the operation of the Farmers' Market.

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Friendship Leader Awards at St Mary's Primary School

This Award was first presented at St Mary's in 2000.  Award winners are elected by their peers who consider them to best meet the criteria of kindness, responsibility, fairness, friendship and acceptance. In addition, staff consider they uphold the school principles.

Jessica Taylor and Josh Orlowski are the Friendship Leaders for 2023. Each receives a congratulatory certificate and a book voucher from Hampton Rotary and their names have been added to the Honour Board for all to see in their final year at
the school.

Pre-School Screening Back in March 2023

The next pre-school screening is scheduled for March 18th at Hampton Primary School. Hampton Rotary Club, in partnership with Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Bayside City Council, and supported by Hampton Primary School, will be delivering the always popular FREE Pre-School Hearing Screening to Bayside children aged 3.5 to 6 years old. In addition, we’re also co-locating a team from the Uni of Melb Physiotherapy Dept who will be offering screening for Large Motor Skills of pre-school children as well.

The screening sessions will take place on Saturday 18th March 9am-4pm and are FREE, and registrations will open soon.

Thanks again to Marie Arendsen for leading this project. Club members will shortly be advised about how they can volunteer to help out on the day. For further enquiries about this project, contact: Marie Arendsen at: arendsen.m.a@gmail.com

Teen Mental Health First Aid Training to be delivered to Year 10s at Sandringham College

As part of the Club’s Youth Mental Health project, a course designed for teenagers will be delivered in April to the entire year 10 student cohort at Sandringham Secondary College. 170 students will receive training on Teen Mental Health First Aid and learn about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem. We really want to thank the College for their collaboration on this initiative to deliver the training to the Year 10 students.

The Teen Mental Health First Aid training course is developed and accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and designed especially for teenagers, and delivered in the school setting. The delivery of this training forms part of our project partnership with Brighton North Rotary, to help improve the mental health of youth in our local area, with specialist training for adults and youth. We want to thank Bayside City Council and the Rotary Foundation for their support of this latest course to be delivered to Bayside students.

Hampton Rotary Helping Disadvantaged Children to Participate in Team Sports

Hampton Rotary are really excited to be supporting TeamSports4All, (TS4A) which is a charity that assists socioeconomically disadvantaged kids aged 5-18 to participate in club sport within their community. This year we are sponsoring their TeamChallengeRelay23 with proceeds from this event raising funds to connect disadvantaged kids in the community with opportunities through team sport. Hampton Rotary have recently been raising funds at our monthly Bayside Farmers’ Market in Sandringham specifically to support TS4A, and by raising donations at the market and sponsoring the Team Challenge Relay 23, Hampton Rotary is helping to reach more children in need who can be supported by TS4A to be involved in sport.

The Team Challenge runs between March 25th to April 2nd and to find out more about the challenge and how you could also be involved to support this great cause, or to donate to TS4A, visit https://www.trybooking.com/CELSP

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

January’s Bayside Farmers’ Market

It was hot and windy for our January market, held over the Australia Day weekend, and it was great to see so many people out and about enjoying the summer weather. We even saw quite a few new visitors to the market this month, some on holidays from interstate and overseas, all discovering and enjoying the great beachside setting for the market, doing some fresh food shopping, relaxing with family & friends and enjoying a coffee and snack, while chilling out to great live music. Thank you to everyone who visited the market and supported all the wonderful hardworking & dedicated stallholders who once again provided an incredible range of produce.

Remember, our Bayside Farmers’ Market is held on the 4th Saturday every month at Trey Bit Reserve Sandringham, and we’ll be back on Saturday 25th February 8am-1pm.

Next Hampton Beach Clean Up

The monthly beach clean-up at Hampton Beach, organized by a group of local Hampton resident volunteers, will take place again on the first Sunday in March – 5th March, 9am-10am.

Hampton Rotary supports this local environmental initiative so if you can assist by volunteering to help with the clean-up, contact Annette Grime for more information – email Annette_grime@hotmail.com

Next Bayside Farmers’ Market – Saturday 25th February

The next Bayside Farmers Market is coming up on Saturday 25th February - 8am-1pm, at Trey Bit Reserve (Jetty Road), Sandringham. You’ll be able to shop for locally sourced fresh produce direct from the farm, gourmet foods and beverages, artisan products from local makers, take-away food & coffee, and enjoy live music …all at a fabulous beachside location!

More details about the market are also available at the market website: https://BaysideFarmersMarket.com.au

Market Volunteers Needed

If you’re interested in joining our volunteer team at the monthly Bayside Farmers’ Market, we’d love to hear from you.
