From the President

Happy New Year! We ended last year with our Bayside Farmers’ Market on Christmas Eve and it was great to see people taking advantage of the beautiful weather and stock up on Christmas goodies.

The next Bayside Farmers’ Market will be on Saturday 28 January 2023 and fingers crossed the weather will be kind to us. As we did throughout 2022, we will be following our COVID Safe plan to ensure a safe and enjoyable day.

The club will be having a social evening on 17 January at the Sandringham Yacht Club and our normal meetings will resume on 24 january 2023 at the Hampton RSL club. It will be a busy year with several projects on the go. I am always amazed when reading the newsletter of the breadth and scope of the club’s projects and we look forward to welcoming new members throughout 2023.

Regards

Amanda

Recent Events

Club Social Evening - Saturday December 10th, Christmas Dinner at Amanda Hill and John Skerritt’s home.

Thank you, Amanda, and John, for hosting our Christmas party once again. Amanda provided much of the food, but this year accepted contributions from members. The result – a delicious spread! The Kris Kringle provided much hilarity as usual! Members and guests enjoyed a lovely evening of fellowship together.

YOUTH and EDUCATION PROJECTS

Friendship Leader Awards at Hampton Primary School

This is the longest continuous Club presentation having first been presented in 1996.

It is awarded to a girl and boy student who are perceived by their peers to best represent the principles of Kindness, Responsibility, Fairness, Friendship and Acceptance.

This year’s Leaders are Grace Stott and Jimmy Wigg. Each receives a congratulatory letter from the Club, a book voucher to a local bookstore and their names are added to the Friendship Leader Honour Board for all to see throughout their final year at school.

At the end of the year, they will be asked to make a presentation of their achievements and activities during the year.

Supporting Communication Development for Physiotherapy Students

Starting in 2023, we will be running an exciting new learning activity with second-year Doctor of Physiotherapy students at the University of Melbourne. This will involve students undertaking short interviews with older adults at several points across the year. The activity will help to further develop students’ communication and interpersonal skills and will be a valuable experience in preparation for students attending their gerontology clinical placements in subsequent weeks.

This project is being managed by Marie Arendsen and is a great initiative to give students some much needed skills in their future careers.

For further information about this project, or if you’re interested in volunteering as an interviewee, please contact: Marie Arendsen Email: arendsen.m.a@gmail.com

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Bayside Family Christmas Event, December 14 at Hampton RSL

A wonderful example of a partnership between community organisations who came together to stage the event, this was an outstanding success and enabled us to make connections with our local community and community organisations.

Thanks to all the organisations that contribute a lot of time (not just on the day, but planning, coordination, and all that happens behind the scenes), the collaborative effort, contributions and dedication by all who make this event a success:- Hampton RSL, Hampton Rotary, BayCISS, Family Life, VICPOL (members from Bayside/Sandringham and Moorabbin’s Proactive team), Team Sports4All, Country Women’s Association, Enhanced Maternal Child Health, St Leonard’s College, Peter Malloy, Choc & Choc’s Chicks, Bayside Youth Services, and members of the Rotary Club of Brighton. Plus of course the Bayside Council for their funding support. The additional toys/presents collected were delivered to BayCISS and distributed before Christmas, again spreading more joy.

Special thanks to RC Hampton ‘elves’ who spent a day sorting gifts.

Hampton Rotary Assists the Salvos

Club Members have assisted the Salvos for many years by personally donating hampers of goodies at Christmas time as a means of helping those in need to experience a little pleasure.

Members brought their donations along to the club meeting on 13th December and Geoff Tickner delivered them the following day.

Beach Patrol 2022 Litter Collection Highlights

Beach Patrol manages cleanups on the majority of beaches around Melbourne. The picture gives an idea of just how much rubbish is dumped on our beaches

Hampton Rotary participates in monthly beach cleanups in our own area.

December’s Christmas Bayside Farmers’ Market

Big thanks to everyone who came to our Christmas Eve Bayside Farmers Market which was such a fantastic event to finish off the year. Proceeds from this market and from the sale of raffle tickets for Christmas hampers contributed towards support of TeamSports4All, which provides opportunities for socio-economically disadvantaged children to participate in team sport. We want to thank all the market patrons who donated so generously to support such a great charity which is doing so much good in our local community.

The Christmas market is always a highlight of our annual market calendar and it would not be possible without the support of so many people who make it such a fun morning. Thanks to Santa who was a fantastic hit with the little & big kids alike (thank you Arran Ferguson), Santa’s helpers (Imogen & Erica), Santa’s sleigh driver Hans, the amazing Vocally Wild Choir (thank you to Russell and his choristers) for sing-alongs to Christmas carols, YarraVillains who had us dancing & prancing to Christmas jingles….& of course, the wonderful stallholders who put on a Christmas spread for us all.

What a great way to finish off this year. Thank you to all the amazing Bayside community who have supported us throughout the year…we are so very grateful.
