From the President

As Christmas gets closer, I wanted to share my reflections on 2022. This year we’ve had less COVID restrictions and greater connecting with family and friends, floods in many parts of Australia and internationally and other disruptions.

The club has responded with financial assistance to Tonga following the volcanic eruption and tsunami in January, to the Pakistan flood relief and the on-going New South Wales floods.

We’ve  focused on our Bayside community with our annual pre-school hearing and motor skills screening, financial assistance and support for youth and teen mental health first aid training, support for local primary school resilience and friendship awards, participating in the Hampton Beach Patrol, financial assistance, mens’ Christmas packs and supplies for Christmas hampers to the Bayside Community Information and Support Service (BAYCISS, support for the  Bayside Family Christmas event and the kids sports charity Team Sports 4 All.

The club provided computers for senior students at a Fijian school, school supplies for a primary school and financial assistance for two students to complete their university degrees in physiotherapy and animal husbandry/veterinary science. Our international program was able to progress a Rotary global grant application for a hearing screening program for children in Tonga.

We learnt more about Australia’s sustainability scorecard, Bayside recycling programs, Rotary’s 2023 international convention in Melbourne, 2023 District conference in Canberra and Rotary’s membership and community consultation initiatives from our guest speakers and our members shared their travel stories.

You gave us great feedback to our community consultation at the Bayside Farmers Market in September and November and we’ll be putting some of these ideas into practice in 2023 – thank you.

I hope to see you at the December market on Christmas Eve and we have Santa and his helpers to join us, a Christmas raffle and fantastic stalls. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and prosperous 2023!

Welcome Anja

The Club is pleased to welcome Anja Holtzhausen as its newest member. Her classification is Sustainable Architecture.

Anja is shown here with her sponsor, Marie Arendsen and her mentor, Bev Blackley.

Guest Speaker - Jay Davis Rotary - Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

RYLA is an intensive leadership experience where young people from 18-30 can develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections. The course was held at Rawson Village Camp in June. Berendale Resilience Award

The Rotary Club of Hampton has presented this award since 2010. It is awarded to a year 11 student who has displayed significant resilience throughout the year. This year's winner is Mikayla Matheny. The school provided the following statement about Mikayla.

"Mikayla shows resilience and positive emotions such as kindness to others, gratitude and being mindful of those around her. She has worked extremely diligently in all her VCAL subjects and has also completed a Certificate 2 in catering. She is a member of the school's SRC and is especially supportive of younger students. She is a role model for all students."

Mikayla's name has been added to the Honour Board and she receives a congratulatory letter from the Club and a JB HiFi voucher.

Spreading Christmas Cheer to Men in Bayside

We've been out and about spreading some Christmas cheer in our local community. It has become a tradition of our Club over the past few years to brighten up Christmas for men in the community. A huge thank you to Club member Geoff Tickner and his wife Prue for sourcing
, packing and dropping off 50 men's gift sets to the team at BayCISS to distribute in their community. BayCISS play a fantastic role providing a range of services and support to people in need, including low income and vulnerable people, and Hampton Rotary were pleased to once again be able to spread some Christmas cheer to the men in our community with their support. Thanks to Simon Kenny Pharmacy for obtaining the products and pricing them at cost or below.

Christmas shop for Bayside Community Information and Support Services (BayCISS)

This year BayCISS has seen a significant increase in demand for food and services. Before Christmas they will assemble and distribute approximately 200 Christmas food hampers to families in need. Bev, Lance and Liz purchased three shopping trolleys full of Christmas goodies and delivered them to BayCISS. At the same time, Rotary Clubs of Sandringham and Beaumaris were also dropping off goods. Great Rotary Clubs think alike?

November Bayside Farmers’ Market

We had a great turnout for our market on Saturday 26th November, and would like to thank all the patrons who donated generously at the entry gates. Proceeds from these donations will be used by Hampton Rotary to contribute to providing Christmas goodies for the families coming along to the upcoming community Bayside Family Christmas Event for disadvantaged Bayside families. Thanks to all the stallholders and volunteers and the dedicated patrons who supported the market this month.
