From the President

While we have the flu season with us as well as Covid, the club has mainly returned to online meetings.

This month some of our members joined the Rotary Club of Brighton North meeting and their guest speaker David Whiting who is one of Melbourne's best-known legal practitioners and I thank them for this invitation.

I mentioned last month about a community consultation - we will be commencing this in the next few weeks to identify the important issues for the Bayside Community, what you think is needed and who else we should consult. we are looking to identify and prioritise the needs in the community to inform the club's community grants program.

An important area of health that the club has been involved in is the Youth Mental Health First aid Training. Partnering with the Rotary Club of Brighton North, two courses were delivered by mental Health First Aid Australia in 2021-2022 for adults working, volunteering or living with young people to better understand signs and causes of mental illness and to assist young people in need.

This was delivered at no cost to participants and the feedback indicated how valuable this was to build competency and support local youth.

Regards

Amanda

YOUTH PROJECTS

Pre-School Screening Back in September

The next pre-school screening is scheduled for September and is already completely BOOKED OUT. Hampton Rotary Club, in partnership with Uni of Melbourne Audiology and Bayside City Council, and supported by Hampton Primary School, will be delivering the always popular FREE Pre-School Hearing Screening to Bayside children aged 3.5 to 6 years old. In addition, we’re also co-locating a team from the Uni of Melb Physiotherapy Dept who will be offering screening for Large Motor Skills of pre-school children as well.

The screening sessions will take place on Saturday 3rd September 9am-4pm and are FREE. Places this month booked out in a matter of days, which shows how very popular and important this project is to the local community.

Thanks again to Marie Arendsen for leading this project. Club members will shortly be advised about how they can volunteer to help out on the day.

Teen Mental Health First Aid Training to be delivered to Sandringham College

As part of the Club’s Youth Mental Health project, a course designed for teenagers will be delivered in August to the entire year 10 cohort of 160 students at Sandringham Secondary College. Students will receive training on Teen Mental Health First Aid and learn about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems that may be experienced by young people, and how they can support a friend who may be experiencing a mental health problem. We really want to thank the College for their collaboration on this initiative to deliver the training to the Year 10 students.

The Teen Mental Health First Aid training course is developed and accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and designed especially for teenagers, and delivered in the school setting. The delivery of this training forms part of our project partnership with Brighton North Rotary, to help improve the mental health of youth in our local area, with specialist training for adults and youth.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

July Bayside Farmers' Market

Even our furry friends needed their winter jackets at the July market. Everyone was rugged up, braving the cold morning, but enjoying shopping from the range of wonderful winter produce available.

At this July market, we raised funds specifically for our Youth Mental Health Projects, and want to thank everyone who donated generously at the entry gates to support this great project which delivers training to both adults and teenagers. $2,000 will now go directly towards funding training courses to be delivered in the local community on mental health first aid.

Thanks to all the stallholders and volunteers for ensuing another fabulous market, and all the community who came out to support the market.

The Bayside Farmers Market will be back again on Saturday 27th August and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone again then.
